SMS stands for Short Message Service . It means sending any short message to any person . It is a very useful service . It was first used in 3 December 1992 . A message "Merry Christmas" was sent from Neil Papworth to Richard Jarvis of Vodafone .
It works in a simple way . Our phone makes a connection with the tower of our ISP . It maintains the connection even when a phone is kept ideal and also when any call is made . This is called a control channel . Every SMS is sent through this channel . The control channel keeps the phone and the server connected . The messages are sent through this .

Every SMS has a limit of 160 characters . Whenever any message is sent it goes through our mobile tower to SMSC which is Short Message Service Center . There it checks the recipient address which is sent through radio waves to the SMSC . The recipients address is analysed and the tower near it is found and message is sent to it . If the phone is active the phone receives it . And if the phone is out of range or not active , the SMSC stores the message in their cloud . And whenever the phone gets active again it sends the message to the receiver . This is called save and forward technique .

SMS are nowadays getting replaced by instant messaging services such as Whatsapp . This works on internet . But in SMS we do not need internet . But in SMS we need to take paid packages of messages that could be sent . But internet is also paid . So indirectly both are paid . But as in instant messaging we send the messages and there is no limit . As the messages are broken into packets and data routing is done . And all those get merged in the device of the sender . This the big advantage of instant messaging .

What is SMS attack?
SMS attack was something which was seen before when they were newly introduced . Sometimes there would be a lot of messages sent at once . So the mobile towers get a lot of raffic and it became difficult also for the calls to happen . This was known as SMS attack . It was fixed by the service providers by taking steps to limit the number of messages at once . The extra messages that came were sent back . And the users were told to try again after sometimes .
