How Fingerprint scanners work and what are their types ?

We use fingerprint scanners in our daily life . Especially on our phones . Fingerprint scanners are made so to make any device secure by adding the fingerprint of the user . Every human being has a different fingerprint . Mobile companies focused on them and introduced fingerprint sensing . Motorola Atrix in 2011 was the first mobile in which fingerprint sensor was there . But after the introduction of a proper finger print scanner by Iphone's 5s this technology was liked and appreciated by all . In our day to day life we use phones and fingerprint sensor in it . We just trace our finger and the phone unlocks (only if your fingerprint is assigned to the device) . It also has got some complexity in its working .

Our finger has ridges and valleys . The part of our fingerprint or the lines that are little above , they are called ridges and the skin part below is valley . In the fingerprint below the black lines are ridges and the white part is valley . Fingerprints are of three types Arch , Loop and Whorl . In Arch, the fingerprint lies towards one side and in loop there are loops of ridges and in whorl there is a loop towards the middle only .

There are two types of fingerprint scanners - optical and capacitive fingerprint scanners .

Optical scanners

In the optical fingerprint scanners , the scanner saves a image of the finger print . Sometimes there a light is also lit so that there could be a clear image of the finger print . When we tap on it from various angles it saves images from all the angels and merges them . It creates a map of the fingerprint which is allotted . Whenever the user goes for unlocking the phone , it touches from any side and the system takes the picture of that side of the fingerprint and matches it with the shown one . If it finds some things similar in them then it unlocks . It does so by saving different points from your fingerprint it never saves the exact finger print . It watches for main points such as where a ridge ends , where there is a small ridge , where any ridge joins with other ,where is encloses any area etc. All these data are further checked by the system whenever any fingerprint is applied .
It also has some drawbacks . It is easy to fool optical scanners . If we take a print of the allotted finger print on any other object and show it to the scanner it opens sometimes . It is because the key points are located in the duplicate ones also .

Capacitive Scanners

Capacitive scanners are more safer and reliable than optical ones . These are used in the phones . Whenever we try to assign our fingerprint it asks us to scan the finger from all sides . In capacitive scanners there are very very small capacitors in the finger print scanner . Whenever we give the input of our fingerprint , the capacitors on which our ridges are placed they get activated , the circuit in those capacitors / sensors completes whenever a ridge is sensed . Where our valleys are present those capacitors remains deactivated . Then a map is created for it and in this way our fingerprint gets stored . Whenever we try to turn on the phone and touch the fingerprint scanner it check which conductors are activated and which are not . It creates a map of it and matches it with the assigned one . The scanner needs to be fast to get a good response . Generally in phones capacitive scanners are used .

Comparatively capacitive scanners are more fast and secure than the optical ones .
There is another major factor which is the acceptance rate . That is the percentage of how much the fingerprint needs to be matched with the original one . It is actually near 85%-90% . That is why sometimes even after touching for a long time the phone does not unlock although your finger print is allotted . Some times if there is sweat in your finger then it will not respond . By this we can conclude
  • How Fingerprint Works
  • What are their types
  • How can they be used
  • Their acceptance rate

So this is all the knowledge I had . It is not copied knowledge, its my knowledge thats why it is called AnupKnowledge .
