Do you use earphones a lot ? And what is NIHL ? How it is caused ?

If you are using earphones then you might have seen warnings of not to increase the volume . Sometimes your parents may have also told you not use earphones a lot as it damages hearing . But we all ignore that . But actually we shouldn't !

The loudness of a sound is measured in decibels . The sound which is above 80 db or 85 db is called noise . We all normally talk in between 55 db to 70 db . But the noise which we hear may be of different things like traffic  , constructional sounds , home appliances , TV in high volume or may be hearing in a earphone in high volume . All these actually cause harm to our ears . All other sounds dont effect us much but these sounds are not good for us if we are regularly hearing them . The sound we hear regularly we get used to that . For example if a person is employed in a constructional site then by hearing those sounds he must be used to it . So whenever we talk to him in normal way he may not hear it . Because he is used to that loudness so the normal talk becomes less audible . As a result he gradually loses hearing power . In this way if you use earphone a lot you get used to it and you become unable to hear it normally .

This is termed as NIHL which stands for Noise Induced Hearing Loss . So actually to know hat happens we need to know how we hear . Sound is produced by vibrations . When the sound enters the ear through a canal , it vibrates the stretched membrane called ear drum . The ear drum vibrates and sends vibrations to the three bones hammer , anvil , stirrup . Then they amplify the sound and send it to the oval window from where the vibrations enter the cochlea and the liquid secreted by cochlea vibrates and it has neuron cells connected to auditary nerve which takes the sound to the brain . There are some hair cells on the base of the cochlea which vibrate . As they move a lot in noise the hair like structures bent and create some pores through which chemicals rush into it . These chemical signals cant be recognized by brain so we can hear.

These things cause hearing loss which later grow into big problems . So while using earphones also we need to be careful . We should use them limitedly and not use where there is no requirement . We should always try to remain away from noises and must see which are good or bad . And we must also make an attempt to see the doctor for checkup regularly in some intervals as they could help us to form an opinion .
