Self Healing Fabric - Wolverine !!! Apart Tech # 3

Have you ever thought of this invention of self-healing materials or textiles? Scientists have developed a fiber through which a fabric can be made and it can heal itself.

For example, we human beings when get hurt our body response and the clotting of blood stops and the tissues repair themselves and the skin is recovered again.

This fabric was inspired by the fictional character of wolverine which can repair heal itself and recover itself from any damage. But damages always takes place in elements or materials. No one can prevent them from damage. Nothing can last forever. But these fabrics or materials sense any damage to them and repair themselves, but are they permanent and so much resistible?

Self-healing materials have a characteristic that they are capable of repairing themselves. In the year 2013 for the first time in the smartphone industry, LG introduced LG G Flex. It had a self-healing cover at the back which the company claimed that heals minor scratches.

This was a huge thing because it was introduced new at the time. These materials just have a little science behind it. These materials have the ability to heal them not to regenerate them. It prevents itself from losing something.

Also, see - History of laptops !!

How it works?

The self-healing fabric is not magic in itself, it has some logic behind it. The first type of fabric used a hollow tube approach. These tubes are very tiny capillaries (like our blood vessels) made of fiber or glass.

These capillaries make a network of them and they also help in increasing the tensile strength (it's capacity to handle the load) of plastic polymers (one single element made of many small elements).

These channels are filled with bonding monomers (elements that make up a polymer) and some hardening substances. When the fabric gets damage obviously the monomers will be scattered.

These bonding monomers then make a bond joining the damage or healing it and then the hardening process brings them back to the normal position. These channels leave us with a advantages that they can be refilled through these monomers as this monomers get supplied through the channels or capillaries.

Another type of design is the microcapsule healing. In this method, the monomers are inside tiny capsules instead of long channels or capillaries.

Whenever the capsule sense any damage to them they break the capsules and then make bond again with the other monomers. In both the methods polymerization takes place through these bonding monomers. In both, these methods polymerization can take place without any outer support.

But one small disadvantage of these capsules is that they cannot repair huge damages. There the bonding may or may not take place.

These capsules do have a capacity for repairing cuts. As they are limited they can get exhausted and may not works after sometimes. Because here we are unable to provide such monomers externally to the fabric. That is why there is a limit to these repairs.

There is another type of liquid that is used to repair or heal fabrics. This is a biodegradable liquid that allows torn textiles to get fixed. The liquid was developed using bacteria and yeast. This liquid does not affect the quality of the fabric.

It has been tested on some cotton and wool fabrics. To make use of the liquid take the liquid and put on the torn pieces and add little warm water and bring the fabrics closer and then due to polymerization with the help of external influence these fabrics will repair themselves.

We can see there are some polymers that can be recycled and be reused through some external heat. But there are also some polymers that cannot be recycled.

But some materials are developed in a way that if any force is applied to cut or damage it the material uses the heat produced through friction between the material and the other causing damage to repair itself. These kinds of developments are being tested so to produce the best final product.

These kinds of self-healing materials can be used to make may big things such as buildings or bridges to repair smaller damages. Some have also come up with the idea to make electric circuits in such ways so that the electric circuit, whenever it gets damage, can repair itself.

This kind of material can increase the limited lifespan and durability of the materials. But one thing to note is that their capacity is less to repair major damages.

For example, if you think of a phone to be made out of self-healing material you need not breaking it into halves and then wanting to get repaired, it is impossible. But advancement is done in all ways and in all section so hope they also get some development and I think that these materials are going to rule the future!
