List of Image File Formats !!! Explained

Whenever we work with images we see the name of images and moreover their file formats which are .jpeg, .jpg or .png also. These file formats sometimes are just out of understanding. But they also have value. But have you ever wondered why they are used?

Images are basically of 2 types - Raster images and Vector Images. The Raster Images are made up of pixels and dots to make an image. But these pixels when zoomed in become horrible. But the vector images contain graphics which are lines or curves and they combine together to make an image, these images can occupy the size they are made in.

So now talking about raster images, they consist of JPEG. JPEG stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group. It is very popular as it is compressed as well as clear. Here the actual image is compressed through Lossy Compression and saves a lot of storage space. Here some parts of the image according to its contribution to the photo get removed, if a part does not give much impact then it is removed.

JPEG is effective mostly in images that are clicked through us or by others which doesn't carry that much details but it fails when it comes to 2D shapes or lines where the edges or curves get a little blur and don't seem good when zoomed in.

Another format that we see in the form of moving objects is GIF which stands for Graphics Interchange Format. GIF uses lossless compression. Here no elements are lost and the edges or curves are seen clearly.

When coming to moving images or animations here many images are rapidly shown in very less time so that it looks like a video. But like others here is also a drawback that it only supports 256 colors.

So sometimes if you convert images with more complexity and more colors they will become grainy or may fade also. They are also not suited for printing.

But if you don't want any loss in image moreover no loss in quality or loss of storage you may go towards PNG. PNG stands for Portable Network Graphics. In PNG files we can observe the quality of both jpeg and gif. Here the sharpness of the images and also the quality is not affected. There is no compression done to the image so it results in taking more storage of space.

The PNG files also allow transparency through which the transparent areas can be identified and can become more flexible. PNG files are commonly shared on the internet and popular over the web as they carry a high amount of graphics and details.

After it, another file format is TIFF which stands for Tagged Image File Format. It has a huge file size and it can use compression such as lossless compression but also supports uncompressed images. This file format is popular among professionals and it has a high quality which is not for common people.

Now moving to vector file formats, EPS is a file format which stands for Encapsulated PostScript. As in vector images, the graphics are high in this file format the system is suggested that how the image is. It can be resized any time and it is also a professional file format.

Another kind of images but not completely file formats are RAW images. These raw files can be converted into negatives that we were observing many years back. The RAW image gets converted to negatives through the information that it has as clicked by the sensor the camera has.

These RAW images need special software to open, they also provide an advantage that these can be edited in various ways. After editing or modification, they can be saved in any format. RAW images are supported by specific devices so that it can be modified. These images are actually very well for editing to fill them with information.

These are all the main file formats that are common everywhere and we use them often. But some other file formats are also there like PSD for Photoshop. They are actually for specific software. These file formats just specify the functions of the images and are not so much complex. They are just used to give an identity to the image. And the relationship between the file formats for raster images is given below. Vector images are actually using EPS or maybe SVG which stands for Scalable Vector Graphic which also has the same function as EPS has.

So this is all the knowledge I had . It is not copied knowledge, its my knowledge thats why it is called AnupKnowledge .
